During the Cold War, Israel was the target of sustained Soviet subversion and conquest efforts. The Soviets utilized their proxies amongst the Israeli Left, the Communist Party (Rakah), and the PLO to chip away at the fabric of the Israeli nationalist consensus. Meanwhile, the PLO built up a massive military force in Lebanon and a terrorist infrastructure in the Israeli-held territories in the West Bank. In the "post-Cold War" years, the PLO and other Palestinian terror groups continued their efforts to subvert Israel and encourage the Israeli Left in their efforts to appease the enemies of the Zionist state. Meanwhile, profit-hungry Israeli companies and naive political elites sought to engage Egypt, Iran, Red China, and other adversaries of the Jewish state.
