A long-past event returns to haunt the members of two families who have returned for the summer to their French village roots. A servant girl in the now ruined chateau once drowned herself in the lake, suspected of stealing her mistress's valuable necklace. Its hiding place is discovered, she is proved innocent, and her descendants are finally able to accept the past. The guilt of the local priest at the time is revealed.
