In spite of their poverty, the insalubrious nature of their dwellings, the casual and dangerous nature of their employment and the ever-present fear of the workhouse, there was a rebelliousness of spirit, a dignity and sense of humour that helped them face a life which otherwise might have seemed unendurable.
