Varick is shocked when his father announces that he is remarrying. Varick never met the woman and is still grieving over the loss of his mother. When Varick is kidnapped by some pirates, he finds out his stepsister paid them to get rid of him. Tempest wanted him out of the way so she could inherit the father's wealth.
