Big-city bootleggers. Small-town secrets. Twin private eyes with hearts as big as their trust funds, unraveling a web of deceit and danger from Chicago's back-room gin joints to rural Indiana Klan country. Welcome to the Jazz Age, where freedom comes with a price...and what matters most is who you owe.
It's 1923, and Chicago society girl Emma McGrath desperately wants to escape her frivolous life. From driving ambulances across the battlefields of the Great War to planning charity balls and angling for a husband? No, thank you. Plus, she's worried about her twin brother, Jack, whose gambling and womanizing can't erase the memory of the wounded soldiers he failed to save. They both need a sense of purpose again, or they'll go crazy.
Emma has the solution: hang out their shingle as private detectives. They've read tons of Sherlock Holmes, and nosing into things is right up their alley, so why not give it a whirl? But their first case, finding a missing speakeasy singer, proves tougher than they bargained for when the singer turns up dead and Jack is the prime suspect. Saddled with a flim-flam artist client who's dodging her gangster ex-boyfriend, one step ahead of a bulldog homicide cop determined to get his man, Emma and Jack skip town to chase a long-shot lead involving the dead singer's brute of a husband who's high up in the local KKK. Out of their depth and with targets on their backs, they stumble on a second murder that holds the key to the first...but can they stay alive long enough to prove it?
