A beautiful, fully illustrated book telling the story of Poundbury, the settlement in Dorset conceived and developed by His Majesty King Charles III.
This is the story of Poundbury, the Dorset settlement initiated by HM King Charles III in 1990 as an alternative to what he saw as the failed housing developments of twentieth-century Britain. Now a thriving community of five thousand people, it was a radical experiment in urban design, integrating homes, businesses, schools, healthcare, and recreation in a single walkable area. Vilified by some at first, it has since been recognised as a pioneering exercise in masterplanning and stands as an expression of the King's ideals of architecture and the built environment.
Fully illustrated with exclusive photographs as well as original architectural drawings and maps, and written with access to the King's personal correspondence, this book tells the story of how a determined group of people, led by the King, broke the mould to create one of the most influential housing developments of its age.
