Plasma Physics: Fundamentals and Advanced Concepts: Series in Plasma Physics
Autor Madhurjya P. Boraen Limba Engleză Hardback – 22 mar 2027
Beginning with the defining properties of plasmas and charged-particle motion, the book progresses through two-fluid theory, ideal and resistive MHD, waves, instabilities and kinetic theory. It also introduces including reduced MHD for tokamaks, magnetoconvection and sunspots, the MHD energy principle, magnetic reconnection, the plasma dielectric tensor, drift-kinetic theory, non-canonical Hamiltonian formulations, Casimir invariants and Taylor relaxation. Symmetry is connected directly to the conservation of the first adiabatic invariant, providing a structural interpretation of the magnetic moment.
The later chapters develop nonlinear plasma physics from several complementary viewpoints. They establish the mathematical connection between plasma sheaths and solitary waves, present detailed treatments of reductive perturbation theory, the KdV equation and the nonlinear Schrödinger equation, and relate sheath physics to dust charging in complex plasmas. The pre-sheath region and a range of velocity distributions are also discussed in detail. The final chapter introduces bifurcation, chaos and KAM-torus analysis, placing plasma behaviour within the broader framework of nonlinear dynamics.
The exposition is deliberately conversational and reader-friendly while retaining the mathematical details. Physical arguments, carefully developed derivations, chapter summaries, problems, and numerous purpose-designed diagrams help the reader move from fundamental concepts to less commonly treated advanced subjects without losing sight of the approximations and physical reasoning involved.

Notă biografică
Madhurjya Prosad Bora is Professor of Physics at Gauhati University, Guwahati, India. He obtained his MSc and PhD from the University of Delhi and subsequently held a postdoctoral fellowship at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, USA. He was also a Commonwealth Fellow at the University of York, UK.
His research interests span plasma physics, astrophysics, and nonlinear dynamics, with particular emphasis on plasma instabilities, nonlinear waves, dusty plasmas, and chaotic phenomena. His work combines theoretical analysis with computational modelling to investigate collective behaviour in plasmas. He has taught plasma physics at the graduate level for more than three decades. He also teaches electrodynamics, statistical mechanics, astrophysics, computational physics, and mathematical physics. His approach to teaching and writing connects physical intuition with mathematical reasoning, presenting complex ideas through a conversational exposition while retaining the essential technical detail.

Descriere
Plasma Physics: Fundamentals and Advanced Concepts develops plasma physics as a coherent “study in approximations.” It shows how each arises from a particular set of physical assumptions and how levels of approximation reveal aspects of plasma behaviour.
