The question of the image leads us back to the question of what makes us human: As a species, we think, sketch, imagine, visualize and dream in images. From an epistemological perspective, images can serve two distinct functions: They can represent what the human eye sees, mediated by the technologies we use to capture visual perception. But they can also make thought itself visible – by abstracting, creating diagrams and logical connections, providing illustrative information or even giving form to fictional ideas. Such practices of visual representation shape how we think and act. The contributors examine the visual decisions involved in turning ideas into images: How can thoughts be translated into images? Is there a right or wrong image for an idea? And how can images be designed to serve this purpose?
