Phenolics: Advances and Applications

Editat de J. Fernando Ayala-Zavala
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 31 iul 2026
This book includes thirteen chapters that detail the advances and applications of phenolics. Chapter 1 aims to evaluate the contribution of emerging green nonconventional extraction processes in the isolation of valuable biomolecules from natural sources. Chapter 2 examines the chemical diversity and bioactivity of phenolics, critically evaluates conventional and emerging extraction techniques, including solvent-based, ultrasound-, microwave-, enzyme-, and electro-assisted methods, and highlights recent advances in green solvents such as natural deep eutectic systems. Chapter 3 discusses the role of controlled-release systems in addressing challenges in the delivery of phenolic compounds, with a specific focus on their biomedical applications. Chapter 4 presents advancements in the study of the antimutagenic mechanisms of phenolic compounds, their significance in preventing mutagenesis-related diseases, and the methodological and clinical challenges encountered in this field. Chapter 5 aims to survey and correlate literature data on the antiglycation mechanisms exerted by phenolic compounds. Chapter 6 examines the plants that serve as sources of phenolic cinnamic acids and the strategies for synthesis, highlighting their growing recognition for therapeutic biological activities. Chapter 7 provides a comprehensive review of the antiviral potential of phenolic compounds. Chapter 8 reviews the application of phenolic compounds in food matrices, including meat, dairy products, fruits, vegetables, and baked goods. Chapter 9 explores the potential of polyphenols as QS inhibitors, starting with an overview of their sources, classification, and mechanisms of action. Chapter 10 summarizes current knowledge on the use of phenolic compounds in aquaculture, including their chemical structures, natural sources, antibacterial mechanisms, and functional benefits, and offers insights into their potential as sustainable alternatives to antibiotics. Chapter 11 explores the potential of phenolic compounds as bioactive agents in pest control and post-harvest grain storage. Chapter 12 provides a comprehensive overview of the green synthesis of nanoparticles, emphasizing the pivotal role of plant-derived phenolic compounds in the environmentally friendly production of functional nanomaterials. Finally, Chapter 13 presents both the current landscape and future potential of phenolics in cosmetic applications.
