People Watching

Autor Andrew G Davies
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 15 sep 2026
People Watching, we've all done it, it's a bit of harmless fun while having a well-earned coffee break, it's a nice way to waste a bit of time. Tell the person next to you the title of this book and invariably they will admit to doing the same. But what happens when it becomes incredibly serious and you're faced with decisions that have huge consequences.
A bereaved astrophysics Professor shares how he and his late wife enjoyed people watching. At its heart, the novel is a contemporary thriller driven by human vulnerability as much as suspense. It also reflects the author's own determination: after receiving a life-changing diagnosis in 2011, Andrew lived for years under the limits imposed by Multiple Sclerosis (MS) before discovering a powerful outlet in creative writing.
The book delivers a tense, original and fast-moving crime story about a widowed Professor of Astrophysics whose café observations unlock an extraordinary and dangerous ability. Beneath the high-concept premise is a deeper story of resilience, loneliness, hidden pain, courage, humour and the need to keep creating despite daily obstacles.
For the Professor, people watching is more than a game; it is a link to his late wife, Amy, with whom he once invented names, histories and secrets for strangers in cafés. After her death, the ritual keeps him close to the past. Then it changes: he begins to hear what others are thinking. What seems impossible becomes undeniable, and his unwanted gift, which he calls "brain coupling", draws him into the attention of police, intelligence agencies and a criminal plot threatening the UK banking system.
The thriller escalates from private grief to national danger. A lonely man in a café becomes an unwilling witness to organised crime, cyber-terrorism and moral compromise. As the authorities grasp the scale of his ability, he is treated as both a vital asset and a vulnerable civilian, pulled deeper into a world of surveillance, secrecy and pressure. The stakes expand from one hidden thought to a conspiracy involving ransomware, foreign actors, corrupt technology systems and the risk of mass financial chaos.
The Professor is never an action hero. Intelligent, funny, damaged, reluctant and deeply human, he moves between dry humour, scientific scepticism and unbearable loss. He questions whether his ability is a gift, a curse, a neurological anomaly or simply another burden on an exhausted mind. That inner conflict gives the novel its distinctive energy, inviting readers into a story where truth is difficult to find and impossible responsibility falls on someone barely holding himself together.
People Watching spins a unique thread of a story, it allows the reader to think and consider the available evidence. But please don't be too eager to make a decision, the distance between the truth and fantasy is often blurred by a slight of hand.
