The original instrumentation was 4 trumpets, 4 horns, 4 trombones, 2 baritones, and 2 tubas. It starts out with an introduction of a choral in D Dorian. Then a melody of this choral is phased between the upper and lower parts until it repeats. This phasing is repeated one more time, but with the upper instruments coming down a note every two repeats and the bottom instruments coming up a note every two repeats. Very interesting chords and harmonies result from the phasing. The phasing resolves and the piece ends in a full choral. The piece is heavy with triples and changing meter. Parts are included for most any instruments: C, Bb, Eb, and F. An interesting option would be tuned percussion - celeste, vibes, marimba, or timpani. For Bb instruments, Parts 1 through 10 are written for smaller instruments with a transposition of a second. Parts 11 through 16 are written for larger instruments with a transposition of a second plus an octave.
