Partial Differential Equations for Scientists and Engineers: A Didactic Introduction

Autor Carlos Fresneda-Portillo, Alberto Gámez- González
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 31 mar 2027
Partial Differential Equations for Scientists and Engineers: A Didactic Approach offers a fresh and accessible introduction to one of the most important areas of mathematics. Developed through a unique collaboration between an experienced mathematics lecturer and a student of applied mathematics, this student-centered text is designed for those encountering PDEs for the first time as well as advanced readers seeking to revisit and consolidate their knowledge.
Unlike traditional texts, this book does not skip essential arguments or leave critical steps to the reader. Definitions, theorems, methods, and proofs are developed in detail, helping readers understand both the techniques and the underlying ideas. Each chapter combines carefully structured theory with worked examples, graded exercises, solutions for a select number of problems, and guidance on common mistakes. Every concept is presented in a clear, intuitive, and self-contained manner, allowing readers to build understanding step by step without requiring extensive background knowledge. The content has been refined through extensive classroom testing and continuous feedback from students and instructors. Beyond its rigorous treatment of theory, the book showcases the remarkable power of partial differential equations to describe real-world phenomena—from fluid flow and heat diffusion to waves, acoustics, electromagnetism, and other processes underpinning modern science and technology
Ideal for undergraduate and postgraduate students in mathematics, physics, engineering, and related disciplines, as well as lecturers and researchers refreshing their understanding, this text provides a complete, pedagogically driven pathway to mastering partial differential equations.

Notă biografică

Carlos Fresneda-Portillo is an Associate Professor at the University of Valladolid, Spain. Having held academic positions at several prestigious institutions, including Oxford Brookes University and the University of Reading in the United Kingdom, he has developed a strong research profile spanning both pure and applied mathematics. His work focuses primarily on the analysis of partial differential equations, with numerous publications in leading international journals. He also has a growing interest in mathematics education, particularly in developing innovative pedagogical approaches that make university-level mathematics more accessible, engaging, and effective for students.

Alberto Gámez-González holds an MSc in Applied Mathematics from Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. A former student of Universidad Loyola Andalucía and recipient of a competitive collaboration fellowship in the Department of Quantitative Methods, he has contributed a unique student perspective to the development of this book. His insight into the learning process helped transform advanced mathematical material into a clear, accessible, and engaging resource for students.
