Paris and Versailles: The Road to Revolution

Autor Tony Spawforth
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 4 mai 2027
A fascinating history of pre-revolutionary Paris and Versailles
When Louis XIV moved his court to the new palace at Versailles, he built a major highway connecting it to Paris. This road brought two communities together: at one end his glittering court, at the other the capital. Now all but forgotten, for almost a century this street carried near ceaseless human traffic in both directions, day and night.
Tony Spawforth explores the stories of those who travelled between Paris and Versailles from the seventeenth century to the revolution, and, in the process, uncovers a wholly new history of old regime Paris. Spawforth takes readers on a tour of Parisian locations with important ties to Versailles, including royal palaces, society salons, markets and workshops. He traces the events that took place in these locations, and the lives of those who lived there. This is a highly engaging account that reveals the profound role Paris and Parisians ultimately played in the downfall of the monarchy.
