Notă biografică

Richard Smith is an independent scholar whose work brings together history, sociology, politics, religious studies and philosophy. His academic background encompasses qualifications in Applied Sociology (B.Sc.), Marketing (Dip.), Adult Education (C&G 730), Management Studies (DMS), Theology (Dip.) and Secondary Education (PGCE). With more than three decades of experience teaching across the humanities and social sciences, from GCSE to postgraduate level, he has developed an interdisciplinary approach that combines historical analysis, sociological theory and philosophical interpretation. His commitment to education and scholarship is reflected in a sustained involvement in adult and higher education. He has held posts with the Workers' Educational Association, Leeds Tutorial College, Harrogate College and various national and international tutoring agencies. His academic interests span the philosophy of history, comparative belief systems, social and cultural change, and the methodological relationship between historical and sociological inquiry.Smith's publications reflect the breadth of these interests. His books include At 47: Poems on "This" or "That" (2010), Advantage Teaching Skills (2013) and A Saga of Smiths: An Epic Family History (2018). In Paradigm Wars: The Conflict Between Three Views of Reality (2026), he examines the epistemological and cultural tensions that arise between competing worldviews. Drawing on historical case studies and sociological theory, the book addresses enduring questions about knowledge, meaning and social order.Alongside his teaching and writing, Smith has delivered invited lectures to a range of academic and specialist audiences, including family history societies and the Yorkshire Medical and Dental History Society. Since April 2023, his work as Chairperson of Leeds Combined Arts further demonstrates his longstanding commitment to bringing scholarship, literature, and cultural history into the wider community.
