In this sweet picture book, a little boy observes how Macho men on TV act: tough, lonely, and angry. But his father shows him through actions and words that it's more important to be loving, kind, and happy.
Every Saturday morning, a little boy turns on the TV and sees how macho men act. So tough and cool! Is that how he should act too?
But then his father takes him out into the real world and shows him another way to be. Papá hugs him and shows that hombres can be loving. Papá screams in terror on roller coasters and shows him that it's okay to be scared. Papá helps their neighbors and shows the boy how hombres can be caring.
With simple text sprinkled with Spanish words throughout, Papá Always Says offers a gentle way to discuss machismo and gender stereotypes. Instead of following the rules of machismo, Papá serves as a strong, healthy role model for young readers, countering the toxic messaging often targeted at young boys. Papá's words resonate deeply with the boy, showing him that being kind to yourself, as well as others, will lead to a life full of love and joy.
