"Scorecard, Program - One Dollar " With this cry, the hawkers of Baseball Underground took on the Boston Red Sox and turned the sports publishing world upside down. Hailed by Newsweek as "Father of the Revolution" in sports publishing, Mike Rutstein was a Red Sox fan looking for a more informative, up-to-date scorecard. When the Sox didn't respond to his proposals, he launched Baseball Underground. But the team didn't appreciate the competition from the upstart publisher, and soon the battle between the Red Sox and their biggest fan was being fought inside and outside of historic Fenway Park, in the courtroom, and in the media. Twenty years after publishing his first issue, Rutstein looks back on two decades of publishing his magazine, battling the Sox and other competitors, and watching his ragtag crew of writers, hawkers, and runners grow up.
