Eleven years after their escape, Alice Drayton and her brother return to the village of Evanston, Maine to pick up Alice's fiance from a research excursion. The town is deserted when the siblings arrive, but it doesn't stay that way for long. The cult members who once called it home are back and ready to conduct their annual Ceremony, and they won't tolerate heathens standing in their way.
Alice and her loved ones agree to rejoin the fold to avoid the gallows. But this time around, they have more to worry about than the Ceremony and witchcraft allegations. Evanston's holy book grants the town mayor, Stephen Miller, license to commit unconscionable acts to ensure the salvation of the faithful. When the town is thrust into chaos, Mr. Miller may go to extremes in order to "protect" his flock.
