Orwell’s Alert!: Power and the Politics of Control in George Orwell’s Novels

Autor Dr. ROBERT VAN DELLEN PHD
en Limba Engleză Paperback – noi 2026 – vârsta ani
A college professor and former college president reveals the political underpinnings of George Orwell as expressed in his novels, with special emphasis on the author’s last two novels, Animal Farm and 1984. The growth of Orwell’s disdain for colonialism, as well as his concern for the quality of life under various political systems, undergirds the analysis. While flaws in Orwell’s analyses are acknowledged, the author believes readers can learn important lessons from the study, lessons that can be applied to the individual’s relationship to the state in our time.

Extras

“Orwell does not resolve the problems caused by a decadent civilization, a bourgeois society that worships the money-god. Rather, he shows in the novel that our choice—Gordon’s choice—is between the life and death of our civilization. Somehow, those common people raising their aspidistras will survive, as the proles do in 1984. They will not bring about a revolution, they will not overthrow the money-god, and they will continue to be exploited by the money code. Nevertheless, they remain human, carrying on the tradition of decency and usefulness. This tradition is increasingly difficult to sustain in the modern world. For Orwell, this tradition is not a matter of choice; it is a matter of survival.”

Recenzii

“Introduced to Orwell’s writings in Professor Van Dellen’s literature class during the Vietnam War and found Orwell’s voice chillingly relevant. Now years later, as Van Dellen perceptively asserts in this book, Orwell resonates as deeply and alarmingly in these politically divisive times.”

“Dr. Van Dellen’s new book on George Orwell is an interesting and insightful exploration of Orwell’s novels.  It shows why Orwell remains so relavent, especially now.  Highly recommended!”

“Van Dellen’s new book on Orwell helps us better understand the novelist’s passionate concern for democracy and the threats it faces.”

“A frightening expose’ showing how easily our beloved democracy may crumble into destructive chaos by a leader determined to become a dictator more concerned with personal fame, fortune, and power than for the people they vowed to serve.  At no time in our history is a study of Orwell’s novels more relevant.  I highly recommend this book.”

“Dr. Van Dellen has spent a lifetime studying literature.  I know because I was among his first cohort of college students, who rushed to get a seat in his seminar on utopian and dystopian literature.  That course introduced me to the powerful voice of George Orwell.  Later, during COVID, I attended via Zoom his Talks on Literature, including one on Orwell and the authoritarian threats to democracy.  Van Dellen’s new book on Orwell reminds us that literature plays a profound role in our complex society.  It reveals human aspirations, struggles, challenges, and unchecked power.  It exposes our passionate longing for truth.”
