Oppression Made Us Leaders: Black Women, Heavy Lifting, and Leadership in State Legislatures

Autor Jatia Wrighten
en Limba Engleză Hardback – apr 2027
Oppression Made Us Leaders: Black Women, Heavy Lifting, and Leadership in State Legislatures argues that Black women in their communities, are bearing the burden of upholding American Democracy. Black women became the heavy lifters through their history of extreme marginalization, shaped by chattel slavery, the negative and lasting effects of stereotypes, and their purposeful exclusion from the polity. Black women have learned to navigate state legislatures; they have studied the rules to be effective legislators and deliver policy that benefits their communities through linked fate, and they have gained leadership through their ambition at the margins. Through generations of perseverance, Black women in America have gained the resilience, fortitude, and unshakable courage required for uplifting this nation boldly through the 21st Century.

Recenzii

In Oppression Made Us Leaders, Jatia Wrighten develops a compelling theoretical construct-the Heavy Lifter Theory-and applies it to the state legislative context using a combination of case studies and quantitative analysis. She effectively demonstrates that collective identity and shared history combine with lived experiences to lead Black women into public service and to elevate the most ambitious among them into significant leadership roles. Wrighten's book adds significantly to a growing literature on race and ethnic politics in the U.S. while also offering scholars of state politics and legislative studies essential new information about the experiences and motivations leading Black women into elected office.
