One Woman

Autor Anita Parkhurst Willcox Editat de Judy Ann Seidman
en Limba Engleză Paperback
One Woman - part autobiography, part commentary and compilation by a woman artist working two generations later - explores the life and work of "forgotten" artist Anita Parkhurst Willcox (1892-1984). Anita lived and worked in "mainstream" American society through most of the twentieth century. Her narrative explores the path of a woman artist who at first, at least superficially, parallels that of her male counterparts: from study at the Chicago Art Institute in the early 1900s, to experiencing World War 1 in France, to a wildly successful career in illustration and design in New York (designing covers for Saturday Evening Post and Colliers, amongst others, in the 1920s). But by the mid 1920s, Anita found that the media image of the "New American Woman" - an image she herself had helped construct - failed to speak to the realities of her life, as a woman, mother, wife and artist. Over the next few decades, she struggled to "re-find" her own voice. The aesthetics she evolved, while not rigidly realist, spoke evocatively to the world around her. Yet she was unable to position this work within the emerging world of "modernist"fine arts; a problem that she herself put down to her political alignments as anti-war, left-wing, and feminist. He career path also faced the pressures imposed on every woman's life: mothering five children, "childbirth fever" and abortion, maintaining household and husband while pursuing a fully-fledged work schedule. One woman is illustrated throughout with Anita's own artwork, in itself a vivid running commentary on her life and times."
