Drawing on experience as a Christian priest engaged in Soto Zen practice, a leading scholar examines the theological and pastoral challenges of dual religious identity.
Religious dual practice--holding commitments in more than one tradition--is not uncommon. Yet, when such practices surface publicly, some Christian denominations have often been swift to judge, lacking scholarly depth, and followed by silence.
Farwell critically examines how interreligious encounters may enrich both theological discourse and Christian praxis. Situated within contemporary theological and religious studies scholarship, the work interrogates prevailing assumptions concerning the coherence and viability of dual religious affiliation. Moreover, it offers a nuanced reinterpretation of theories of interreligious learning, highlighting the spiritual and existential possibilities of dialogical engagement.
Ultimately, the book brings together academic insight and experience to call the church toward greater hospitality and curiosity about religious hybridity within its midst. With practical reflections on pastoral care and formation, this work offers an informed approach to faith in a pluralistic age, presenting critical insights for clergy navigating interfaith realities in contemporary ministry.
