Over more than five decades, On Kawara (29,771 days) developed a distinct and highly nuanced form of artistic expression that engaged with chronological time and its function as a measure of human existence. A key figure in the conceptual art movement that emerged in New York in the 1960s, the artist created a significant body of work organized into discrete series that together form a meditative examination of time and place.
A curator, writer, and historian of twentieth-century art, Anne Wheeler has spent her career close to the work of On Kawara. Wheeler was among the last curators to collaborate directly with the artist, as assistant curator of the major career survey On Kawara – Silence (Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, 2015). She joined Kawara’s One Million Years Foundation in 2018, and as Managing Director and Secretary of the Board, she works to make Kawara’s art internationally accessible through exhibitions and publications, and to preserve and document his legacy through archival research and the On Kawara Oral History Project. Wheeler has held curatorial positions at the Guggenheim and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
