On Gramsci and Bourdieu: Hegemony, Fields, and Tools for Social Research
Editat de Matteo Puoti, Antoine Rogeren Limba Engleză Hardback – 19 feb 2027
Rather than creating vague mixtures of their theories, this volume develops a structured interaction that preserves the complexity of their respective works while revealing powerful complementarities in their approaches to symbolic struggles, consensus formation, and social classification. The book's innovative structure progresses from theoretical foundations through empirical applications to advanced conceptual synthesis. Contributors examine diverse research areas—from literature and cultural production to media, politics, and territorial marginality—demonstrating how the integration of hegemony and field theory illuminates social phenomena across disciplines. Each chapter builds upon others in a circular, dialogical structure that challenges traditional disciplinary boundaries while providing researchers with practical analytical tools.
This volume will appeal to scholars across the social sciences and humanities seeking innovative theoretical frameworks and serves both specialists in Gramscian and Bourdieusian studies, and researchers looking to enhance their analytical approaches. Graduate students and established academics alike will find valuable insights for investigating the complex relationships between culture, power, and social stratification through a transdisciplinary lens that bridges theory and empirical research.

Recenzii
'This innovative collection puts two of the most important critical scholars of the 20th century – Gramsci and Bourdieu – into dialogue with each other. This is a vital and important intervention which will be of great value in expanding intellectual and political horizons into the 21st century.'
Mike Savage, Professorial Research Fellow at LSE’s International Inequalities Institute, UK.
'I was dazzled by this excellent set of essays which are distinctive in drawing on both Antonio Gramsci and Pierre Bourdieu to shed new light on a variety of fields. The approaches developed are analytically incisive, and offer valuable new insights, based on a close reading not just of Bourdieu and Gramsci, but also of the founding fathers of cultural studies, Edward Thompson, Raymond Williams and Stuart Hall, as well as Pascale Casanova, Claude Grignon and Jean-Claude Passeron. The reported networks of intellectual adoption are at some points particularly surprising: the extraordinary recuperation of Gramsci by theorists in the French far right – however superficial – is quite mind-blowing to this British sociologist.'
Bridget Fowler, Honorary Professor at University of Glasgow, UK.
‘Pierre Bourdieu engaged the thinking of Antonio Gramsci in very limited and elusive ways. Yet numerous scholars have found compelling points of convergence and divergence between in these two seminal thinkers. This volume puts their respective concepts, such as hegemony and symbolic domination, violence and capital, or common sense and doxa, in creative dialogue that moves beyond comparative exegesis or a balance sheet of respective contributions and limitations. It proposes a generative reading that extracts interpretative tools from each for creatively framing new research topics. A welcomed initiative for future research.’
