The origin and nature of consciousness remains one of the biggest open questions in science today. Understanding who or what we are is at the heart of religious doctrine and regarded by mystics, scholars and many laypersons alike as the ultimate purpose of life. Our dreams and other related states of consciousness serve as a doorway to the divine, as by analogy our nocturnal imaginings can, if viewed correctly, shed light on the nature of manifest reality (the universe) and the workings of the unmanifest source of all, the creative force commonly called God. For as has oft been said, the universe is a dream in the divine mind.
