Over time, what began as a hyperlocal practice rooted in youth culture and neighbourhood spaces evolved into a global phenomenon, influencing music and dance scenes across Europe, Asia, and beyond. Moving from its origins in house and ghetto house music to its contemporary global reach, this book traces the lives and legacies of its key innovators while centring the dancers, communities, and spaces that brought the culture to life. Alongside this history, the book examines the deeper forces shaping footwork - gender dynamics, racialised urban geographies, and the impact of digital circulation - showing how the dance circle itself reflects broader social structures within Chicago.

The book is informed by years of serious fandom and direct dialogue with people in and around the Footwork scene. Rather than claiming an uncomplicated insider authority, Packman makes their outsider position central to the book's method. The book asks how art can be understood across distance, fandom, and experiential difference, using Chicago Footwork to explore the ethics and limits of cultural appreciation in an internet-mediated age. Methodologically, the work is rooted in autoethnography and archival research, combining personal experience with direct dialogue with key figures in the scene.
