Sometime in the 1970s, the notoriously repressive bureaucrats, who ran the Deutsche Demokratische Republik, commissioned two photographers, hired St Pauli Girl models, chose the locations, such as oil factories, worker canteens, and set about creating their own style. Was it intended as propaganda? Or a move to counter bourgeois Western values?
