Recenzii
Highly recommended. Lower-division undergraduates through faculty.
The question of nominalism is perhaps the best-known part of William of Ockham's (1287-1347) philosophy. It has often been understood in the context of contemporary debates between realism and nominalism: for example, do universals exist in addition to particulars, and do abstract entities (e.g. numbers, sets, propositional contents) exist in addition to concrete things in the world?...Claude Panaccio's Ockham's Nominalism: A Philosophical Introduction is an excellent introduction to the subject. Through a clear and systematic analysis, it offers a comprehensive overview... this book is remarkably accessible.
Panaccio's book is simply superb. It offers a useful tour through forbidding thickets of scholastic jargon, a lively engagement with contemporary philosophy, careful and clearly presented references to ancient, medieval, and modern sources, and helpful recapitulations, at regular intervals, of difficult or disparate material, all of this set forth in clear and straightforward prose. Ockham's Nominalism deserves to become the standard introductory work on this subject.
