The collection asks 'What is home if not the choice - over and over again - to stay?' Flitting between four generations of family in Ohio, Tehran and Scotland, her second collection expands upon the final question posed by her first, The Wrong Person to Ask. Written at a time of continuing conflict between Iran and the US, her poems consider the losses of dislocation and resettlement alongside the subtleties of continued heritage, asking what the body remembers when the mind and tongue do not.

Marjorie Lotfi's acclaimed debut, The Wrong Person to Ask, was winner of the James Berry Poetry Prize 2021 and the Forward Prize for Best First Collection 2024, also a Poetry Book Society Special Commendation, and was shortlisted for Poetry Book of the Year (Saltire Book Awards 2024) in Scotland and longlisted for the Michael Murphy Memorial Prize 2025.

Notă biografică

Marjorie Lotfi was born in New Orleans, moved to Tehran as a baby with her American mother and Persian father, and fled Iran with one suitcase and an hour's notice during the Iranian Revolution. After waiting with family for her father's return in her mother's tiny hometown in Ohio, she lived in different parts of the US before moving to New York as a young lawyer in 1996 and then back and forth to the UK. She now lives in Edinburgh. She was one of the three joint winners of the inaugural James Berry Poetry Prize in 2021. Her first book-length collection, The Wrong Person to Ask (Bloodaxe Books, 2023) was a Poetry Book Society Special Commendation and won the Forward Prize for Best First Collection 2024. Marjorie also founded the Belonging Project, considering the experiences of refugees with over 1,500 participants across Scotland, and is a Co-Founder and Director of the charity Open Book. She is an Ignite Fellow with the Scottish Book Trust, one of the 12 Collective of women writers, co-editor of New Writing Scotland, and former chair of the board of StAnza, Scotland's International Poetry Festival.
