Neuropathic pain is one of the most common, most debilitating, most costly, and most difficult to treat categories of chronic pain conditions that are characterized by a lesion or disease of the somatosensory nervous system. Managing neuropathic pain is challenging and requires skillful assessment and comprehensive and integrated treatment strategies that are mechanism-guided, evidence-based, and individualized. However, these critical and integral elements are very fragmented in the current literature. The mechanistic understanding of neuropathic pain is typically found in basic research articles. Clinical research evidence is presented in forms of clinical trials with emphasis on minimizing biases such as those from patient selection and assessment. Individualized considerations for each patient are usually presented in case reports and problem-based learning discussions. This book overcomes these barriers and integrates all the critical elements around individual patient care into a coherent management strategy that is practical and applicable to daily clinical practice. Rather than compiling what have been published in the literature, this work emphasizes on identifying and highlighting the key points or findings that guide decision-making in clinical practice. It integrates the key points around a typical case scenario that not only represents the core of the diagnostic and therapeutic processes but also allows introduction and differentiation of painful conditions that bare similarities with the case in hand. The overarching goal is to improve clinical outcomes through better understanding of the mechanisms, more accurate diagnosis, and wiser and more comprehensive treatment strategies.

This is a multi-authored, well edited, well-illustrated paperback book covering most aspects of our current understanding and management of neuropathic pain arising from lesion or disease affecting the somatosensory nervous system.
As an interventional pain management physician, I find the book very useful in my everyday practice. Particularly, I appreciate the presentation by condition and inclusion of both common and rarer types of neuropathic pain. The book is detailed and descriptive and can help guide treatment of patients. The references ensure that treatment approaches are current and evidence based.

Notă biografică

Jianguo Cheng, MD, PhD, is Professor of Anesthesiology and Director of the Cleveland Clinic Multidisciplinary Pain Medicine Fellowship Program. Dr. Cheng is the President of American Academy of Pain Medicine (AAPM) and immediate past Chair of the US Section of World Institute of Pain. He has recently been appointed to the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Pain Management Best Practices Inter-agency Task Force (PMTF). Dr. Cheng is also a member of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Expert Work Group (EWG). As a clinician, Dr. Cheng was recognized by Best Doctors in America (Best Doctors Inc.), 70 Best Pain Management Physicians in the US (Becker's ASC Review), and Top Doctors (International Association of Anesthesiologists). He has published more than 250 articles including investigations on opioid tolerance and neuropathic pain and a textbook "Fundamentals of Pain Medicine" (Springer-Nature). In addition, Dr. Cheng plays active leadership roles in theAssociation of University Anesthesiologists (AUA), American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA), American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA), and American Academy of Regenerative Medicine. He also serves as Senior Editor, Associate Editor, and Section Editor for the scientific journals of Pain Medicine, Pain Practice, and Pain Physician.
