Muted Lives
Autor Charlotte Sturgessen Limba Engleză Paperback – mai 2027
In Muted Lives, two generations of women strive to survive on a council estate in a small, English, seaside town, their identities merging in shared discontent as they look over the garden fence at social recognition: that shiny dot on the horizon of patriarchy and class that is always out of reach. Buses take you out of the estate, westwards to the grammar school Alice should, but doesn't, attend; poverty and gender stereotypes have the last word. A generation on, amid the chaos of resentment and misplaced sentiment, a small child is left an orphan. Janet, the misfit, has no desire to take her on, but who else is there? Yet, against all expectations, she will begin to carve out a future from the rubble, and come to terms with the past. As for the child, she will go on to write her own script; her love and talent for dance will take her across the social divide.
