Music Research: A Handbook

Autor Laurie J. Sampsel
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 10 iul 2026
Clear, concise, practical, and up-to-date, Music Research: A Handbook, Fourth Edition, focuses on the three pillars of the graduate music bibliography course: research, writing, and citation. Drawing upon her lengthy experience teaching this class, author Laurie J. Sampsel has thoroughly updated her staple text. Part One introduces students to the major print and online research tools available today, while Part Two focuses on writing, approaches to assignments, and documentation. Each chapter includes new suggested readings and revised evaluation checklists. With a strong focus on the connection between research and writing, this comprehensive volume also advises the reader on topics such as avoiding plagiarism and using gender-neutral language. For the first time in this edition, student writing examples are included and discussed, and new sections have been added on using special collections and archives, finding online materials such as articles and eBooks, and navigating new challenges with Artificial Intelligence. Appendixes provide examples of citation of musical sources in the big three style manuals (Chicago, APA, and MLA), and a companion website provides updates and additional content.Although intended primarily for use in graduate level courses, this book is also ideal for undergraduate students engaging in library research or writing research papers.

Recenzii

I think Laurie Sampsel's Music Research fills a real need and is practically perfect. The book is well-organized and the writing is clear. The contents are appropriate
Music Research is the most current text on the market at this time. Its best features include short but informative chapter introductions written in a clear way; concise advice on research and writing; evaluation checklists in boxes; and style manual information at your fingertips.
I would absolutely recommend Music Research. The amount of information presented is enough to get students started, but not so much as to overwhelm beginners. It focuses on most of the topics that are important to our students. The inclusion of general introductory sections and explanatory passages is superior to the purely bibliographic listings of other books.
