In the second decade of the twenty-first century astronomy has seen the beginnings of a revolution. After centuries when all our information about the Universe has come via electromagnetic waves, now several entirely new ways of exploring it have emerged. The most spectacular has been the detection of gravitational waves in 2015, but astronomy also uses neutrinos and cosmic ray particles to probe processes in the centres of stars and galaxies.
The book is strongly oriented towards measurement and technique. Widely illustrated with colourful pictures of instruments, their creators and astronomical objects, it is backed with descriptions of theunderlying theories and concepts, linking predictions, observations and experiments. The thread is largely historical, although obviously it cannot be encyclopaedic. Its point of departure is the beginning of the twentieth century and it aims at being as complete as possible for the date of completion at the end of 2020.
The book addresses a wide public whose interest in science is served by magazines like Scientific American: lively, intelligent readers but without university studies in physics.

John Beckman ist emeritierter Forschungsprofessor für Astrophysik am Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias. Nach einem Studium der Theoretischen Physik an der Universität Oxford promovierte er an derselben Universität in Astrophysik. Nach einem Postdoc-Aufenthalt an der University of California Berkeley nahm er eine Stelle am Jet Propulsion Laboratory der NASA (Caltech) an, wo er als Projektwissenschaftler für das Infrarot-Radiometer auf der Mariner 6-Sonde zum Mars tätig war. Nach seiner Rückkehr nach England lehrte er an der Queen Mary University of London und forschte auf dem Gebiet der Millimeterwellenastronomie. Neben Forschungen im Bereich der Sonnenphysik maß seine Gruppe als erste den Spitzenwert im Spektrum des kosmischen Mikrowellenhintergrunds, fast ein Jahrzehnt vor der Messung mit dem COBE-Satelliten. In dieser Zeit war er auch während der 74 Minuten dauernden längsten totalen Sonnenfinsternis der Geschichte an der Beobachtung der Chromosphäre von einem Concorde-Flugzeug aus beteiligt. Nach einem Aufenthalt in der ESTEC-Einrichtung der Europäischen Weltraumorganisation wurde er zum ersten Forschungsdirektor des Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias berufen, wo er seither tätig ist.
Seine Interessen haben sich von den Planeten über die Sonne zu den Sternen und schließlich zu den Galaxien weiterentwickelt. Seine gegenwärtigen Forschungsarbeiten befassen sich mit der Struktur und Entwicklung von Galaxien, wobei er die breite Palette von Instrumenten nutzt, die an den kanarischen Observatorien zur Verfügung stehen.
Er hat 35 Doktorarbeiten und eine ähnliche Anzahl von MSc-Dissertationen betreut und verfügt über 650 Publikationseinträge beim NASA Astrophysical Datasystem (ADS). Im Rahmen seiner Öffentlichkeitsarbeit hat er Hunderte von Vorträgen an Schulen, Universitäten und in Amateur-Astronomievereinen in einem Dutzend Ländern gehalten. Er ist wissenschaftlicher Leiter und Dozent der "Jornadas Astronomicas de Almería", die seit 2005 jährlich hochkarätige populäre Astronomie der Öffentlichkeit nahebringen, unter anderem mit Vorträgen von sieben Nobelpreisträgern und sieben ESA- und NASA-Astronauten.
Die "Festschrift" für John Beckman anlässlich seiner 40-jährigen Forschuingstätigkeit in der Astronomie trug den Titel "Pathways through an Eclectic Universe". Sein breite Wissensspektrum macht ihn zu einem geeigneten Autor für ein Buch über Multimessenger-Astronomie, in dem er die neuesten Möglichkeiten zur Beobachtung des Universums über Neutrinos und Gravitationswellen in das Panorama der Beobachtungen einbezogen hat, die mit der gesamten Bandbreite des elektromagnetischen Spektrums gemacht werden.
