A Curse Spoken in Secret
What lingers is more than a haunting. It is a legacy carved into the bloodline.
Spanning more than a century, Mommie Missing follows Black Southern families whose love runs deep, whose bonds endure hardship, and whose devotion can become fierce when protecting those they cherish most.
From kitchens filled with Sunday laughter to porches where music drifts into the evening air, their lives are shaped by love, faith, family, and communities built on resilience. Yet beneath these traditions lies another inheritance-the shadows of the South itself-Jim Crow, night riders, the Great Migration, colorism, and the histories families carried quietly from one generation to the next.
Threaded through their lives is the quiet presence of hoodoo-not as spectacle, but as memory and inheritance. A force woven into family stories and forgotten wounds, shaping events no one realized were connected to a curse spoken long ago.
As generations pass and the truth surfaces, one question remains-can a family escape what was placed upon them?
For readers drawn to the lyricism of Toni Morrison, the generational storytelling of Jesmyn Ward, and the folkloric traditions of Zora Neale Hurston, Mommie Missing is a cinematic journey through Southern memory-where love is powerful, community is sacred, and the past is never truly gone.
A tale of devotion, survival, and inherited secrets, Mommie Missing explores the forces that shape families-and the courage required to break what has been passed down.
