Modernizing the World Language Classroom: Small Instructional Steps to Maximize Student Proficiency

Autor Erin Austin, Lisa Bartels
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 19 apr 2027
As a world language teacher, you might feel caught between “legacy-style”, or isolated vocabulary- and grammar-based approaches, and more modern, proficiency-based instruction. This resource can help you to bridge the gap between these approaches to teaching with small instructional adjustments that have big impact on students’ language proficiency.
Many teachers might wonder why they should change “what’s been working for years,” and understandably so. The process of changing your curriculum and pedagogical approach can be overwhelming. The book supports teachers with both of those very valid concerns by first discussing relevant research and then providing a series of “small steps”: practical, easy-to-use classroom strategies and practices that you can immediately apply with your students.
This is an essential resource for any world language teacher wanting to implement research-based instructional strategies to modernize their classroom.

Recenzii

"Austin and Bartels take an intriguing look at how we, as language educators, must adapt and evolve our methods to support today's language learners. The book’s light-hearted descriptions and explanations along with practical strategies make this a wonderful addition to every language teacher’s repertoire of tools."
- Stephanie Carbonneau, French Teacher and co-founder of Manie Musicale

“Austin and Bartels have written a must-have for every language teacher’s bookshelf. Together, they combine extensive pedagogical expertise with second language acquisition research, translating both into classroom-ready strategies (with a good helping of humor and illustrative personal stories along the way!). I recommend this book for any language teacher wanting to deepen their understanding of language pedagogy, be it through a self-study, department book club, or university course.”
- Erin Fell, Ph.D., Linguist and Teacher-Researcher

"In their book, Modernizing the World Language Classroom: Small Instructional Steps to Maximize Student Proficiency, Erin and Lisa lay out how World Language instruction has changed over the course of their (and my own!) careers. They provide ideas for not only the veteran, traditionally trained teachers, but for all experience levels of educators who are seeking ways to focus on proficiency and tie in activities closer to the target culture and real-world application of the target language. They provide examples of how these activities have played out in their own classrooms as well. This book is a must for any WL educator who wants to have their students gain the knowledge in the target language to feel confident, proud and eager to use the language in and outside the classroom setting. "
- Dana Goodier, EdD, Podcast Host of Out of the Trenches, Educational Consultant and Past-President, Colorado Congress for Language Teachers (CCFLT)

"This book is about more than teaching language. It's about effectively connecting with students and creating fluency with effective and caring methods. It shows, in practical steps backed by the latest SLA research and practice, how to create proficient and enthusiastic language learners. I highly recommend it and encourage world language teachers to absorb its valuable lessons."
- Bryce Hedstrom, World Language Teacher and Trainer, BryceHedstrom.com
"As a French teacher with over 20 years of experience, I could easily relate to the classroom realities the authors describe. Their writing is informative, engaging, and easy to read, and their humor makes it an enjoyable experience. I especially appreciate how they connect research with practical ideas we can use in our classrooms, emphasizing small, manageable steps toward proficiency-based teaching. This is an encouraging resource for both new and experienced language teachers, with our students and their changing needs at the heart of the conversation."
- Cecile Nedellec, Ph.D., 2025 CLTA Teacher of the Year
