In Mobsploitation: A History of Italian-American Crime Culture in Film, filmmaker and film podcaster Vito Trabucco maps the sprawling, undocumented ecosystem of mob cinema that grew up in the shadow of The Godfather — the knockoffs, the international reinterpretations, the low-budget cash-ins, and the genre hybrids that never make it into serious film criticism because serious film criticism doesn't take them seriously. Deliberately excluding the canonized art-house works of Coppola and Scorsese, Trabucco instead builds a history of the "other" films: the ones cinephiles dismiss as stereotype and gratuity, the ones that turned Italian-American identity into a cinematic shorthand of accents, violence, and comfort food.

The book traces the genre's evolution across six distinct waves — Proto-Mafia cinema before The Godfather, the 1972–76 "Godfather shockwave," the cross-pollination years with Italy's Poliziotteschi crime films, the 1980s–90s neighborhood-identity cycle, the post-Sopranos self-awareness era, and the parody/meta-cycle that followed — covering everything from Duke Mitchell and Fernando Di Leo to studio pictures like HBO's Gotti.
