Recenzii
This book is valuable today for its knowledge and insights into the life of a Hindu woman poet as it demonstrates the power of devotion that transcends local contexts and inspires for diverse conversations.
The scholarly work involved in producing this volume was surely prodigious: tracking down early versions of the saint's songs and stories, as well as meticulous comparisons of various versions-oral, dramatic, printed, and cinematic. Enabling the reader to understandthe ways in which Mirabai's story was adapted, used and revered over the last five hundred years offers a true segue into the idiosyncratic fabric of Indian culture.
Martin's book considers the cultural, spiritual, and gender dynamics that shape the fluid-yet continually and globally relevant-image of Mirabai. The book will thus be relevant not only to scholars and general audiences interested in studying Mirabai's poems and images but also to researchers from a variety of backgrounds.
As a study of a bhakti saint, this book is exceptional in the historical range it covers; further, it is a long-awaited monograph centered on a female bhakta(one of very few) that brings to light the glaring dearth of scholarship on genderwithin the study of bhakti. Martin's book successfully demonstrates a rigorous study of gender within bhakti traditions and, hopefully, sets the stage for many more to come.
