Mendel’s Genetics: History, Hybrids and Heredity: History of Modern Science, cartea 6

Autor Peter J. van Dijk, T. H. Noel Ellis
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 15 apr 2027
How Gregor Mendel (1822–1884) uncovered the rules of inheritance, which would later profoundly change biology, remains one of the greatest mysteries in the history of science. Because his work was rediscovered long after his death, few historical sources survive; by reinterpreting these and incorporating newly found materials, we argue that his discoveries likely arose from his plant-breeding programme. Stripping away later genetic concepts, we reexamine his experiments as he likely understood them, analysing his methods, data, reasoning and relationship to Charles Darwin and Carl Nägeli. We show that Mendel’s Pisum experiments remain highly relevant to today’s biology education.

Notă biografică

Peter J. van Dijk, PhD (1991), University of Groningen, is a plant geneticist studying apomixis (clonal reproduction through seeds). He has authored over 60 peer-reviewed papers and helped identify apomixis genes in Mendel’s hawkweeds. He received the Mendel Memorial Medal (2023) for contributions to Mendel scholarship.

T. H. Noel Ellis, PhD (1979), University of Edinburgh, is a plant geneticist specialising in pea genetics and genomics. He has authored over 150 peer-reviewed papers and has helped identify pea genes studied by Mendel. He received the Mendel Memorial Medal (2025) for contributions to Mendel scholarship.
