Vidal is a handsome young Colombian who invites his friend Perla to leave Colombia and join him in Paris, where he lets her in on his plan: to have her -- unruly and rebellious as she is -- marry the elderly Count Adolphe de Cressay. In return, the count will make good on his promise to name Vidal the legitimate heir alongside her.

Groomed by Vidal, Perla takes her place at the count's side, and the plan seems to be working -- until, a year later, the aristocrat's accidental death is thrown into doubt by his nephew Clementi, who is determined not to hand over the inheritance to such upstart heirs.
