"Maz and Me" is not a new "Catcher in the Rye," but its thirty-year-old narrator, Tony Goodbody, has affinities with his predecessor, Holden Caulfield and, while cooperating with Maz's "older woman" efforts to enable his self-improvement via trips to Paris and Hay-on-Wye and other "cultural" scenes, he points up present experience with glimpses of teenage moments, and amusing comment on both past and passing scenes." MAZ AND ME is a story narrated by Tony a thirty-year-old man, searching for a girlfriend who matches his perceived intellect. He is attracted to an older woman and accompanies her to Paris, a London book-launch party and the Hay-on-Wye Festival of Literature. As Tony goes about his daily life he provides observations of his thoughts and feelings, often quite graphic and amusing. Tony encounters minor characters such as old school friends, and the French students he first met at Maz's house as a teenager. One school friend, who tells Tony it is a "cinch" to get a girlfriend, persuades him to go speed-dating. This event has consequences. A humorous yet philosophical story of human life.
