Mathematical Modeling in Evolution

Autor Maria Servedio
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 25 mai 2027

An introductory text combining the basics of a mathematical modeling approach to evolution with a conceptual treatment of evolutionary processes

Mathematical models have played an integral role in the development of the sciences of evolution and ecology, and giving beginning students a comprehensive introduction to this approach can greatly enhance their understanding of these fields. This book provides readers with the mathematical building blocks used to model evolution—how to write equations describing natural selection, migration, mutation, sexual selection, and genetic drift—and shows how to combine them to address complex evolutionary questions. The text offers both an entry point to mathematical modeling and a thorough conceptual treatment of evolutionary and select ecological processes. Approaches for accompanying student work include pencil and paper as well as with the programming platforms Mathematica and R. The emphasis is on understanding the “why” of such analyses rather than following them by rote.

• Based on a course taught by the author for many years at UNC Chapel Hill
• Features accessible language and easy-to-follow, biologically focused examples
• Teaches basic techniques for analysis, including equilibrium analyses, stability analyses, and iterative programming techniques
• Includes coding using the free platform R or the widely available Mathematica, for which many schools have a site license
• Can be used as a stand-alone or supplementary text for an undergraduate course in evolution or evolution and ecology
• Also provides an essential entry point for graduate students and researchers
