For eighth-grader Marci Evans, handling troublemaking supernatural creatures comes just as naturally as being the 'responsible one' in her slightly chaotic family. After all, negotiating with faeries and bridge trolls isn't much different than talking one of her siblings down from a tantrum. When it comes to monsters and magic, Marci's always had her best friend Tessa for backup-at least until this fall. After her parents' divorce, Tessa moved across the country. Now, Marci is all alone as the most dangerous creature she's ever faced-a kelpie-menaces her neighborhood. Armed with skunk bombs, jean jackets (for armor, of course), and immunity from the shapeshifting monster's hypnotic powers, Marci hatches a plan to stop the kelpie before it can devour her or any local kids. But when her own parents' relationship falters, she starts to feel responsible for that, too ... and keeping her family together is a little hard to juggle with the whole defeating-a-child-eating-horse-demon thing. Packed with humour, action, and tips on how to deal with faeries and other creatures from Western folklore, Alexandra Mae Jones's quirky, heartfelt middle-grade debut shows readers we're not always as alone as we think.
