A ground-breaking and foundational introduction to Maori ways of thinking and making sense of the world, now available in a second edition.
Georgina Stewart weaves stories from her own life experience, identifying as Maori, to introduce the worldviews of the Indigenous peoples of Aotearoa. Her personal approach provides a rich and one-of-a-kind account that challenges traditional ideas about who we are and what we know. Featuring updated chapters and study resources, alongside accessible interpretations of primary source material, comprehensive bibliographies and guided suggestions for further reading, this new edition includes: - A chapter on working with Maori philosophy and equal rights for Maori education
- New coverage of concepts and values including whakapapa and Maori knowledge
- Discussion of recent debates between science and matauranga Maori/indigenous knowledge
- A comprehensive guide to teaching the tradition
>Stewart explains Maori systems of thought and shows how spiritual and physical knowing is woven in connection with past, present and future dimensions. She takes in the politics of identity, colonialisation and illustrates how Maori identity plays out through professional, political and personal contexts. This is a rare opportunity to 'see in' to Maori ways of knowing and gain an understanding of how that knowledge has evolved. Stewart anticipates the questions Pakeha (non-Maori) may have and what is required to incorporate a Maori world view into everyday life. For anyone who wishes to broaden their understanding of the world and use indigenous philosophies in their own teaching and research, here is the place to start.
