Life After Life

Autor Paddy Armstrong

Spre deosebire de Life after Death Row de Saundra D. Westervelt, care analizează sistemic invizibilitatea celor exonerați, Life After Life păstrează o notă profund personală, fiind o mărturie despre reconstrucția unei vieți de familie după traume instituționale majore.

Descriere

On the 5th of October 1975, the IRA detonated two bombs in the heart of Guildford, a garrison town just south of London. Five people lost their lives, and over sixty were injured, many seriously. With the IRA obviously to blame, and public opinion crying out for justice, suspicion fell on three Northern Irishmen, one of whom was Paddy Armstrong. Though a sensitive man with little interest in politics, he was arrested, interrogated for days under the harshest conditions and swiftly convicted for terrorist offences. He would spend the next fifteen years in prison. The legal saga to release the Guildford Four - Paddy, Gerry Conlon, Paul Hill and Carole Richardson, Paddy's girlfriend at the time of his arrest - captured front pages and dominated headlines on both sides of the English Channel for over a decade. But the voices of those at the heart of the saga remained for the most part silent. For Paddy, his story became one of resilience and pragmatism in the face of the most grave injustice. Initially bewildered by what had happened to him, he set about building a life in prison alongside those whose campaigns had created the climate of fear in which he was convicted: IRA men, PLO fighters, political prisoners. He adapted to the grinding and uncompromising nature of life on the inside, its culture of violence and retribution, all the while trying to keep dreams of freedom from impinging on his perspective. Today, Paddy Armstrong is a husband and father, and it has been over twenty-seven years since his conviction was quashed. But the memory of his experiences lives on, and it is here, for the first time and with unflinching candour, he lays bare the experiences of those years and their aftermath. Stirring and compassionate, Life After Life is a moving testament to the depths of human resilience --

Descriere scurtă

Looking back over the last six, almost seven decades, the images that flash through my mind are hardly believable - sometimes, it feels like I'm remembering someone else's life. The truth is, I've lived three very different lives: the one before prison; the one in prison; and my life since then. It has taken years to make sense of it all, but now I've found a voice to speak about it.
Paddy Armstrong was one of four people falsely convicted of The Guildford Bombing in 1975. He spent fifteen years in prison for a crime he did not commit.
Today, as a husband and father, life is wonderfully ordinary, but the memory of his ordeal lives on. Here, for the first time and with unflinching candour, he lays bare the experiences of those years and their aftermath.
Life after Life is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of forgiveness. It reminds us of the privilege of freedom, and how the balm of love, family and everyday life can restore us and mend the scars of even the most savage injustice.
'This book captures the sweet soul of Paddy. Beautifully written. For lovers of freedom everywhere.' Jim Sheridan
'Paddy Armstrong's account of his wrongful conviction and imprisonment is as gripping as a work of fiction. It is an extraordinary, terrifying story. I am familiar with just about all the considerable body of memoirs arising from the miscarriages of justice of the 1970s, but I can say without equivocation that this is the best. Beautifully written. If it were a work of fiction, it would be worthy of the Man Booker shortlist.' Chris Mullin, The Observer
'Couldn't put it down, stunningly written, honest, shocking, harrowing. A horrendous story, populated with some real heroes'. Noel Whelan, Barrister and Irish Times columnist
