June și Day au amândoi cincisprezece ani, însă maturitatea lor este forțată de o societate care îi vede ca pe niște piese de șah. Ca și The Hunger Games, acest roman reușește să educe simțul critic al cititorului față de autoritate și manipulare, fără a fi însă didactică sau moralizatoare. Structura narativă, bazată pe perspective alternate, ne permite să vedem Republica atât prin ochii elitei, cât și din mizeria mahalalelor, oferind o dinamică de tip „șoarecele și pisica” ce evoluează surprinzător. Această abordare a dualității și a sacrificiului personal se regăsește și în alte lucrări ale autoarei Marie Lu, precum Skyhunter, unde explorarea rezilienței umane în fața opresiunii rămâne o temă centrală. Totuși, Legend 01 păstrează o prospețime aparte prin modul în care reinterpretează teme clasice ale onoarei și răzbunării într-un decor futurist, pregătind terenul pentru conflictele politice complexe ce vor urma în Prodigy.
