Landscape and Time: Scales, Traces, Interweaves, Trajectories

Editat de Benedetta Castiglioni, Emmanuel Reynard, Nelly Valsangiacomo
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 14 dec 2026
This book explores the temporal dimension of landscape as a complex, multi-layered theoretical and empirical object. It examines how multiple temporalities intersect, overlap, and interact within landscapes, moving beyond static or purely spatial understandings to reveal landscape as a diachronic terrain where multiple times coexist, clash, and reshape one another.
Contributions from leading researchers explore the interdisciplinary framework for understanding how time permeates landscapes across scales, from deep geological time to lived, everyday experience. By weaving together French-speaking and Italian-speaking research traditions, the book offers 16 empirical case studies and conceptual reflections drawn mainly from Alpine and Mediterranean contexts, employing diverse methods including GIS and remote sensing, geohistorical analysis, rephotography, rhythmanalysis, and narrative approaches. It fosters cross-disciplinary dialogue, contributing to a more nuanced and pluralistic understanding of how past, present, and future times shape our perception, representation and experience of landscape.
This book is intended for researchers, academics, and advanced students in landscape studies, geography, environmental humanities, archaeology, urban planning, and architecture. It will also appeal to landscape practitioners, heritage managers, and policymakers seeking theoretically grounded and methodologically diverse perspectives on landscape change, permanence, and future-oriented management strategies.
