Volume IX,2 of the historical-critical edition of the works of Annette von Droste-Hülshoff contains the commentary on the letters she wrote between 1839 and 1842. The sheer number of references and cross-references identified here gives detailed insight not only into the literary intentions of the author but also into the prevailing mentality of the period. A major section is given over to notes and comments on the author's extremely productive first sojourn in Meersburg in the winter of 1841/1842. Alongside copious notes on individual passages, the commentary also substantiates editing decisions with regard to the texts of the letters and the dating of them.
