As the story progresses, the characters development is evident when Katinka goes to work at the factory so that she may help her mother to better their lives. The importance of recognizing kindness is revealed as Irina is rewarded for her treatment of an elderly woman as she approaches the store. The inclusion of illustrations throughout "Princess Katinka: Refugee" does bring this work to life.
