Karen Language Phrasebook: White Lotus Press

This is the only practical, currently in-print phrasebook dedicated to the Sgaw dialect of Karen (S'gaw Karen). Written by T. F. Rhoden after a year of intensive language study on a Boren Fellowship along the Thailand-Myanmar border, it fills a real gap: almost every other Karen language resource is either long out of print, missionary-era, or purely academic.

What sets this phrasebook apart is the intellectual honesty of the introduction. Dr. Rhoden does not pretend Karen is a major language of commerce or diplomacy. He argues instead that the real reason to study it is the privilege of spending time with an extraordinarily generous speech community whose political history has left distinctive fingerprints on everyday vocabulary.
