The author was born and raised in Wiesbaden-Schierstein. Wiesbaden is the capital of Hessen; the suburb Schierstein is an old fisher town overlooking the Rhine. It is also considered the gate to the Rheinhessen wine area. Growing up meals made from scratch was an important part of the daily life. In 1998 she moved with her husband and two children to her husband's hometown in Michigan, where she continuous to celebrate German and American holidays with family and friends.
