Braiding together humor, traditional knowledge, the love of a granddaughter for her grandmother, and the antics her rambunctious corn husk doll, author Stacy Wells (Choctaw) and illustrator Madelyn Goodnight (Chickasaw) share a humorous and heartwarming story of a gift shared between generations.
Corn husk dolls are lively and full of mischief. You never know what they might do.
Issi can’t wait to share a special gift with her grandmother: a handmade corn husk doll. But Issi and her mother have a long way to travel on the train through Oklahoma and Texas—and there are a lot of antics a little doll can get up to when it comes alive on the journey!
Stories and humor are hallmarks of the Choctaw Nation, and corn husk dolls are a great example of both. Made out of the dried leaves, or "husk," of a corn cob, these mischievous dolls bring joy to those around them, especially children.
